NOT Netanyahu - Olmert is Resigning

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will announce on Wednesday that he will leave office in two months, Israel's Channel Two television reported.

The report said Olmert will not run in his Kadima party's leadership contest on September 17, clearing the way for rivals to try to form a new government. Channel Two said Olmert would step aside as soon as Kadima chooses a new leader.

Well, Benjamin Netanyahu of the Likud has wanted to be Prime Minister again. He's certainly going to try for it now. God help us if he gets the job. Nothing but blood, death, and suffering will come if he regains power.

Hate to predict it but it will not make a wit of difference to the peace process. It will remain stalemated while the occupation/colonization continues, and pretty much that is the strategy: talk peace, drag feet, continue taking land.

When will Israel shake the Likud party.

We are almost done shaking off the neocon party in America, hopefully our restoration of sanity and strangle on tyrany and radicalism will inspire them to vote their government into shape.

Olmert's party is not Likud, it is Kadima. Likud has been out of power since Sharon formed Kadima in 2005.

Here's hoping that there's a shakeup and Labour gets a turn at bat, though.

Ok I know Sharon softened up at the end, but is Kadima to be celebrated or are they just not as extreme.

In the American framing you could say that the GOP is hawkish on it's own, but the Neocon coalition was hell bent on creating war for the sake of it.

After reading Klein's piece on Likud pushing Bush for war with Iraq I am seeing strong parralels between the Neo-con club in the USA and Likud in Israel.

Sad how are media is too afraid to report the reality in Israel.

I remeber when Sharon sparked the last intifadah. I remember the media taking a total neutral stance saying in matter of fact tone "Yesterday Sharon walked up the steps of some church in bethlehem, and those crazy palestinian terrorists decided to attack. We have no idea why, and if we did know why we would still condemn it"

Im just saying it's a tragedy we dont report on Israel.

Many Americans, including me have it burned in that only two people live there, one kind of jew and one kind of muslim, its all so black and white, good and evil. we never get the real story.

Kadima is center-right, Likud is far-right. Certainly Kadima is the lesser of two evils.

This is why I say I'm hoping for Labour to get in. :P

I love how Labour party is almost always the better party in most countries.

I dream of a day that America still has it's 2 party system, but one is called Labour, the other Democrats (funny, its that way in england, and i think labor is more liberal)

The UK has:

Conservative (right-wing, similar to our Republicans)
Labour (center-left, similar to our Democrats)
Liberal Democratic (left-wing, similar to our Green Party)
Green (quite similar to our Green Party)

Unfortunately, only Conservative and Labour have any political power. A lot of liberal Brits are dissatisfied with Labour (the party of Blair) but don't have a much better choice.

But evils nonetheless. Neither party supports a contiguous, sovereign and independent Palestinian state. It is either no state (Likud) or bantustans (Kadima, Labor).

Israel is the key to middle east peace. (none / 0)

Olmert was doing a pretty good job in moving peace talks along, but someone there didn't want him to succeed. The right wing may have been behind the effort to pull him down.

Regardless, Netanyahu would be a disaster not only for Israel and it's neighbors, but for the entire region, for oil prices, for global peace. If Likud takes control again, we're all in a heap of trouble.
